Bottle Rocket

As you probably know, we're taking July off from throwing our own 3st of the Month event.

Why? There's a few reasons. The first is that we already have an event that we're going to (you're welcome to join us). The second reason is that we're just kinda beat. We've been throwing these parties for almost a year. Which brings us to our third reason...we're working on one hell of a party in August to mark our 1 year anniversary!

But just because we have good reason to take a month off doesn't mean we don't just feel a little guilty. So, we're making up for it by putting together this series of fireworks-themed cocktails so you can throw your own 3st in July - complete with a playlist and all.

We couldn't do fireworks-themed cocktails without a bottle rocket. And like the flammable kind, this one packs a BANG! It's double-boozy thanks to the locally-made Pennington's Strawberry Rye Whiskey and a base of Anthem Cider (remember them from last December's "Bubbles" event?). Anthem is a great-tasting dry apple cider (not sweet) and perfect for this cocktail.

We just ask that, like with real fireworks, you handle these safely.

equipment:

10 oz resealable bottle
small funnel

ingredients:

2 oz Pennington's Strawberry Rye Whiskey
.5 oz fresh lime juice
1 oz cranberry juice
6 oz Anthem Apple Cider

method:

Make these in advance so you can ice them down. Using a funnel, add all ingredients to the bottle and reseal. Chill until drinking.

Pennington's Punch

By now, you surely know how we like to challenge the conventional.

Just because most Tiki Drinks are made with rum, does not mean that they have to be. To prove that point, we've invited the local Pennington's Strawberry Rye Whiskey to join us at our Tikitober event on October 3 at Track One.

If you've never had Pennington's, it's basically pure rye whiskey with natural strawberry flavors and a touch of sugar. It's great as a shot, but also surprisingly mixable too (check out all the recipes they have on their website). Unlike some other flavored spirits, it does not taste artificial (well, because it isn't).

So back to the cocktail... Like any other good Tiki Drink, this one needs fresh juices and layers of flavor. The fresh juices from white grapefruit and lemons add the 'juice,' and the spice of the rye, a little grapefruit bitters and fresh grated nutmeg the all-important layers of flavor.

equipment:

blender
glass

ingredients:

2 oz Pennington's Strawberry Rye Whiskey
2 oz fresh-squeeze white grapefruit juice
1 oz fresh-squeezed lemon juice
2 dashes grapefruit bitters
1 cup crushed ice
freshly-grated nutmeg

method:

Add Pennington's, grapefruit juice, lemon juice, bitters and ice to a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into glass and grate fresh nutmeg on top. Serve.

Pennington Re-Fashioned

Pennington's Strawberry Rye Whiskey is a locally-made Nashville booze that released earlier this year and has already grown to be distributed in Illinois, South Carolina, Georgia and Michigan. It's got the spice of the real rye whiskey, but also juicy all-natural strawberry flavors. Spicy and sweet. Hard and soft. Kinda like a mullet but much tastier.

There's probably more folks taking shots of Pennington's Strawberry Rye more than those making cocktails with it, but you'd be surprised how versatile it can be when it comes to mixing.

Our 3st of the Month members had the opportunity to try Pennington's at our August kick-off event and we've heard quite a few of them ask for this recipe. So, here you go folks...ask and you will receive. It's a pretty easy one, that's for sure!

equipment:

rocks glass

ingredients:

1.5 oz Pennington's Strawberry Rye Whiskey
2 dashes aromatic bitters
pinch fresh-ground black pepper

method:

Place ice in your glass, add all ingredients and give it a swirl. See, we told you that was easy.
